THE HEINZ ENDOWMENTS
With about $1.5 billion in assets, the Endowments ranks among
the top 50 foundations in the country. Its roots are in the private
philanthropy of the Heinz family, founders and managers of the
H.J. Heinz Co. and leaders in public service. Through five generations,
the Heinz family has been a generous benefactor of the arts, cultural
institutions, civic-economic development, the environment and
human services. The wills of the son of the company founder, Howard
Heinz, and his sister-in-law, Vira I. Heinz, provided endowments
that created the foundation known today for grant making that
is concentrated in southwestern Pennsylvania.
The Endowments’ mission is to help the region
thrive as a whole community—economically, ecologically,
educationally and culturally—while advancing the state of
knowledge and practice in the fields in which it works. The foundation,
which also strives to develop solutions to problems that are national
in scope, disburses about $60 million in grants to nonprofit organizations
and public projects each year.
MAGEE-WOMENS HOSPITAL
OF UPMC
Magee-Womens Hospital of UPMC is designated a National Center
of Excellence in Women’s Health by the U.S. Department of
Health and Human Services. More than 500,000 babies have been
born at Magee since its inception in 1911, and Magee’s Neonatal
Intensive Care Unit is Pennsylvania’s largest. Specialized
programs for women include breast and gynecological cancers, genetics
and reproductive endocrinology. Magee recently expanded its clinical
care to men as well as women, with a full-service Emergency Department
and services including imaging, cardiology, orthopaedic surgery,
lupus, gastroenterology, colorectal surgery, bariatric surgery,
urology, neurology and pulmonology.
With Special Thanks to:
THE JOHNSON FAMILY
FOUNDATION
Through its environmental health grant making the Johnson Family
Foundation promotes health and a clean environment. By leveraging
opportunities presented by new science, the foundation seeks to
reduce environmental burdens in people, the built environment
and in nature.
WILLIAM PENN FOUNDATION
Through the generous support of the William Penn Foundation scholarships have been provided to enable women from Philadelphia to attend the conference.
THE DAVID L. LAWRENCE
CONVENTION CENTER
Combining innovative architecture with cutting-edge environmental
efficiency, Pittsburgh’s convention center marks a civic
design revolution. Breathtaking views of the North Shore and Downtown
from the concourses, balconies and terraces are only part of its
appeal. The building is the first “green” convention
center in the world. It has been certified with a Gold LEED (Leadership
in Energy and Environmental Design) rating by the U.S. Green Building
Council. The steel and glass structure was designed to reduce
energy usage and provide a pleasing aesthetic to an urban waterfront.
